WoW Forever Paladin: Tank, Healer and Ret Reviewed

Holy Strike, a real tank taunt and new group healing: we assess Paladin as damage dealer, tank, healer and support in the current beta.

The verdict first: Paladin is finally moving

WoW Forever does more than raise Paladin numbers. Holy Strike gives every Paladin an active melee strike at level 6, Seal of Fury turns Judgement into a four-second taunt, and Light's Vigil is designed to give Holy deliberate party healing. The class still lacks a normal short interrupt, has limited ranged control outside Undead and Demon encounters, and must manage Mana plus the Seal and Judgement framework.

Our interim verdict is positive but provisional. Levelling to 20 already feels more active, Protection becomes much more complete when Consecration arrives, and the support kit is exceptional. Raid DPS, main-tank durability and level-60 healing remain untested. The latest officially confirmed client on 24 September is 1.60.1.69977; Blizzard's notes list Mac and controller fixes, while available comparisons show no new Paladin data changes from 69913.

Holy Strike, Judgement and Consecration

Holy Strike is an instant weapon attack with added Holy damage and a baseline twelve-second cooldown. It improves the rhythm between auto-attacks, Seals and Judgement, although beta players disagree about its present damage. The clear gain is activity, not proven top DPS.

Judgement no longer consumes the active Seal. That removes recasting friction, saves Mana and makes Judgement of Light, Wisdom and the Crusader easier to maintain as group tools. Consecration is trained at level 20 rather than bought in Holy; its first four targets take elevated damage and threat. Blessing of Might, Wisdom and Kings now last one hour, and Kings is baseline. These are major quality improvements without removing Paladin's planning.

Retribution: a credible damage dealer at last?

Retribution now combines Holy Strike, Judgement and Consecration with talents that join weapon and Holy damage. Twist of Light formalises Seal twisting: activate Seal A, swap to Seal B, retain A as an Echo, and let the next melee hit benefit from B plus A's Echo. It promises depth without a swing-timer workaround, but Mana, timing and gear will set the ceiling.

Level-20 reports often call Ret strong, sometimes overtuned, while other testers find Holy Strike weak for its cooldown. Early enemies, combined Holy Strike and Judgement burst, healing and immunities can explain both impressions. None of this proves level-60 S-tier DPS. The design finally treats Ret as a proper damage role; its endgame scaling remains unknown.

Protection: taunt, Mana and defence

With Seal of Fury active, Judgement taunts for four seconds. This solves the historic lack of a taunt, but it is not a standalone Warrior button: it depends on an active Seal, Judgement range, cooldown and hit reliability. Swift Judgement can provide an occasional reset after a miss. Seal of Fury also deals Holy damage and grants a shield-based absorb.

Righteous Fury now increases threat by 90 percent in current guide data. Consecration, Holy Shield and Holy Strike create a coherent threat kit. Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization return Mana from absorbed hits and blocks; Reckoning can also trigger from blocks. This looks excellent in dungeons. Long raid encounters still need testing. Iron Creed's short Holy Strike mitigation and Improved Righteous Fury's passive reduction come from current data and remain subject to beta tuning.

Templar's Bulwark is powerful, not invincibility

Templar's Bulwark currently describes an eight-second absorb equal to 100 percent of maximum health. Unlike percentage reduction, it is a finite pool that repeated hits can consume. It also applies Forbearance, linking it to the timing of Divine Shield and other immunity effects.

That gives Protection a distinct emergency window rather than copying modern tanks. It is immediately attractive for dungeons, but raid viability still depends on boss damage, defensive itemisation, block scaling, Mana and reliable taunting. Forever has solved the conceptual taunt problem; it has not yet proven Paladin as a level-60 main tank.

Holy and the old group-healing gap

Holy retains Holy Light, Flash of Light and Holy Shock, while Infusion of Light, Voice of Truth and Reverence add spell interaction, temporary Silence and Interrupt immunity, and Spirit regeneration while casting. Light's Vigil applies a 30-second effect to an ally or enemy. The next Holy Shock avoids triggering its cooldown; on an ally it heals that target's party, while on an enemy it adds Holy damage and refunds 75 percent of Light's Vigil's Mana cost.

On paper this directly addresses Paladin's AoE-healing weakness, particularly in five-player groups. Raid value depends on party layouts, scaling and encounter damage. Holy looks more complete, but is not yet a proven best raid healer.

Support remains the real superpower

Blessing of Kings gives ten percent stats; Might adds melee attack power; Wisdom restores Mana; Light improves Paladin heals; Salvation reduces threat by 30 percent. Protection, Freedom and Sacrifice answer physical damage, movement effects and dangerous damage spikes. Cleanse removes Magic, Poison and Disease, while Lay on Hands and Divine Intervention remain exceptional emergency tools.

Judgement of Light and Wisdom support health and Mana, and Judgement of the Crusader amplifies Holy damage. Fire, Frost and Shadow Resistance Auras now reach nearby raid members. Against Undead and Demons, Exorcism, Turn Undead and the new two-second Holy Wrath stun add specialist value. Paladin may be one of Forever's strongest utility classes, but that is an editorial assessment rather than a measured ranking.

How well does Paladin level?

Retribution is the natural solo path: Holy Strike from 6, persistent Seals after Judgement, healing, immunities and Consecration at 20 produce speed with safety. Protection becomes attractive for multiple enemies and dungeon levelling once its shield, Righteous Fury and Consecration interact. Holy levels safely and can heal groups easily, but should trail an offensive Ret build in kill speed.

Level-20 assessment: Solo Ret 9/10 🟢, Prot 7/10 🟡, Holy 6/10 🟡. Survival 9/10 across all three. Kill speed Ret 9/10 🟢, Prot 6/10 🟡, Holy 6/10 🟡. Multiple targets Ret 7/10 🟡, Prot 9/10 🟢, Holy 7/10 🟡. Dungeon levelling Ret 8/10 🟢, Prot 9/10 🟢, Holy 9/10 🟢. These ratings describe the early toolkit, not a finished level-60 ladder.

Solo, groups, dungeons and raids

Solo, Paladin excels through self-sufficiency and recovery. In a duo, damage, healing, buffs, Cleanse, Freedom and emergency protection overlap in ways a damage meter misses. In dungeons, Protection offers four-target threat and a taunt, Holy gains a party-healing route, and Ret adds damage without surrendering emergency utility.

Raids must consider Blessings, Auras, Cleanse, Judgements, Salvation and resistance support alongside personal output. Utility can strengthen a raid slot, but cannot permanently disguise inadequate damage, healing or survival. Final raid composition cannot be predicted from the level-20 beta.

Paladin in PvP

Retribution combines Holy damage, Hammer of Justice, Seal of Justice, Freedom, Protection, Cleanse, self-healing and immunities. Twist of Light may deepen burst windows later. The missing standard interrupt and limited ranged control remain meaningful weaknesses. Repentance exists in current data, lasts six seconds and breaks on damage.

Holy's Voice of Truth can grant six seconds of Silence and Interrupt immunity, a potentially important healing window. Protection can hold objectives and disrupt, though pressure may be limited. Divine Shield, Lay on Hands and Forbearance must be judged under final PvP restrictions. No responsible max-level tier list is possible yet.

What is actually known on 24 September?

Confirmed or directly visible: Holy Strike at 6; Judgement preserves Seals; Consecration is baseline at 20 and prioritises four targets; Seal of Fury adds a four-second taunt; one-hour Blessings and baseline Kings; raid-wide resistance Auras; Holy Wrath's two-second Undead and Demon stun; Undead Paladin as a new race-class combination. Build 69977 is the latest confirmed client and carries technical fixes.

Data-supported but not endgame-tested: Twist of Light, Templar's Bulwark, Light's Vigil, Iron Creed, Swift Judgement, block Mana, Voice of Truth and Reverence. Unknown: level-60 DPS, raid meta, boss-tank scaling, long-fight Mana, full Holy raid performance, PvP meta and best gear.

Conclusion: who should play Paladin?

Solo players and levellers gain a safe class with more active decisions. Dungeon players get a useful role in every specialisation. Tanks finally receive a real taunt and a distinctive defensive plan, healers gain party healing and offensive options, and damage players get a more skilful Retribution design. PvP players retain exceptional emergency support but no short kick.

Paladin in one sentence: WoW Forever turns the classic support Paladin into a much more active hybrid intended to tank, heal and deal credible damage without losing its extraordinary group utility or every Vanilla weakness.
