WoW Forever Auction House: your first sale

Start with a small quantity you genuinely have spare. Learn how the Auction House works before tying up your travel money in stock.

Updated:

Choose a straightforward item

Ore, cloth or herbs are easier to compare than a rare weapon with unusual stats. Keep the materials needed for your next profession step. Bound items are not suitable for an ordinary sale to another player.

Search for the exact item

Open the Auction House through an auctioneer for your faction. Search the exact name; for equipment, check the variant and stats too. A similar name or quality colour is not enough. City guards can help you find your way.

Compare the unit price

Convert each offer to one item. For example, 20 items for 40 silver cost 2 silver each; 5 for 12 silver cost 2.4 silver each. These are illustrative numbers, not current market prices. Check whether the selling interface expects a unit or total price.

Read the preview before posting

Check quantity, price, duration and the displayed deposit. A deposit and a sale fee are separate costs. Do not copy a percentage from another WoW version; use the terms shown in the current selling window.

A listing is not income

An asking price does not prove that buyers will pay it. Try a small quantity rather than copying many similar listings. Repeated relisting can cost money and tie up items without securing a sale.

Review what happened

Check mail and the auction overview after a sale or expiry. If an item returns, inspect the market again instead of reposting unchanged. Keeping a useful crafting material may be better than selling at any price.

Walk through one small sale from start to finish

Take a spare stack of Linen Cloth, for example. First set aside what you need for bandages, bags or your next profession step. Search for exactly Linen Cloth, then compare several listings rather than only the first result. One extremely expensive listing may simply never sell; one unusually cheap lot does not necessarily represent the whole market.

Choose how much you actually want to offer. Before confirming, check the entered price and its unit again. If you list ten items but the field expects a whole-stack price, do not accidentally enter only your intended price per item. Read the deposit for the duration you selected. If it is disproportionate to your small lot, change the quantity or keep the materials for now.

After a sale, compare the amount received with your planned proceeds. If the items return, do not automatically relist them repeatedly. The quantity may not suit buyers, competing offers may have changed, or you may now need the cloth yourself. A first small auction succeeds when you understand price, costs and outcome, even if it does not achieve the highest price on the market.

Use imported prices as a reference

The crafting calculator can use server material prices. Check realm, faction and scan time. A missing price is unknown, not free; an old scan cannot replace a look at current offers.
