Connect and enable your controller
Official support covers XInput-compatible controllers. PlayStation button artwork alone does not guarantee hardware compatibility. Enable controls through Escape → Options → Gameplay → Gamepad. Before fighting, check stick and button detection and read the bindings the game actually displays.
Learn the basic controls
The left stick moves your character; the right controls the camera. LB selects friendly targets and RB hostile ones. Practice away from danger: select an enemy, switch to an ally, follow with the camera and return to the enemy. Avoid changing every default at once.
Give each bar a purpose
LT, RT and both triggers together access additional bars. Keep urgent reactions on easy-to-reach buttons. A practical arrangement is routine attacks on the base layer, defence and support on one extra layer, travel and occasional tools on another. Check each layer before relying on it.
Build around your role
As a healer, reliable switching between allies matters most; practice with a small group before a dungeon. Tanks need target switches and defensives without hunting for buttons. Damage dealers should keep interrupts or control off awkward combinations.
When a control does not respond
First check whether focus is in a menu or the world and whether a trigger is still held. Then inspect Gamepad options. Do not erase all settings immediately. Keep a record of a working layout, change one thing and test that exact change.
Useful shortcuts
These combinations use Xbox button names. Compare them with the bindings shown in your game, especially after changes. Hold LB and RB together for these shortcuts; they are different from the LT and RT triggers.
| Combination | Action |
|---|---|
| LB + RB + B | Open backpack |
| LB + RB + D-pad Up | Quest tracker |
| LB + RB + D-pad Down | Open chat; type with a keyboard |
| LB + RB + D-pad Left/Right | Switch action bar set |
| LB + RB + right stick forward/back | Camera zoom |
A short exercise before group content
Select a friendly player, then an enemy, then the ally again. Find the appropriate ability each time without choosing the wrong target type. Next practise moving and turning the camera while holding your chosen action bar.
Finally open a vendor and back out without buying. Then find a particular item in your bag. If these quiet exercises are already confusing, adjust focus or bindings before entering a dungeon.
Arrange actions by purpose
A healer might put frequent heals on one layer and protection or support on another. A damage dealer can keep common attacks together and reserve an accessible position for an interrupt or control. This is a layout suggestion, not a ready-to-import profile.
Avoid putting an occasional travel action where you expect an emergency response. Add new abilities individually and try them afterwards. When changing roles, recheck friendly targeting and your main defensive actions.
