Choose the right group size
Barrow Deeps is designed for ten players, Hyjal Summit for twenty and Onyxia for forty. Consider which group you can assemble regularly. More places mean more coordination, not automatically a better starting point.
Complete access before raid night
Onyxia requires the Drakefire Amulet in your inventory; you do not need to equip it to enter. Complete your faction’s quest chain ahead of time. Another player’s amulet does not grant you access, and you should not assume other raids use the same requirement.
Have a clear assignment
Ask for your actual assignment: which target, healing coverage, enemy or swap? “I deal damage” is not enough when a special job is needed. Know who to ask when uncertain and which call means stop before the pull begins.
Prepare without overspending
Start with repairs, suitable food and class reagents. Discuss extra consumables with your group before spending gold. A guild requirement is not automatically a game-enforced access condition. Leave bag space for loot and quest items too.
Make the first pull understandable
Before the first attempt, clarify your starting position, the main danger and where to move. Ask about unfamiliar mechanics. A strategy from another version is not proof of how a new boss works. Follow your group’s current explanation.
Learn from the evening
After a mistake, choose one clear correction instead of ten new jobs. Note what caused your death or missed assignment and practice that first next time. A follow-up date and agreed loot rules are also part of preparing a lasting group.
What to settle the day before
Confirm the time, expected finish, role and meeting point. Ask about loot rules before the first item drops. Finish any preparation, purchases or access requirements now. An invitation alone does not answer those questions.
Write down three things: how to reach the entrance, whom to contact if late, and your job in the first fight. This prevents many avoidable problems at the start.
Make your assignment specific
As a tank, clarify your enemy, its facing and any handover. As a healer, ask which players you cover first and whom to tell if you cannot heal. As a damage dealer, know when to switch targets and whether a special assignment takes priority.
These are preparation questions, not a fixed strategy for every boss. If the leader gives a different task, briefly repeat what you will do. One clear question can prevent an attempt built on a misunderstanding.
Respond usefully after a failed attempt
First identify why you died or the attempt ended. Were you out of healing range, on the wrong target or moving too early? Change that specific point next time. More damage will not fix a positioning mistake.
Wait until the group is ready to restart. Check repairs and supplies before a longer continuation. If you need to leave early, say so in time for a planned replacement.
