Prepare the party before travelling
Plan this as an early five-player dungeon around levels 13–18. That is a preparation range, not a claim about a hard entrance requirement. Bring a tank, a healer and three damage dealers, and tell the group if this is your first visit.
Repair, bring drinks for mana users and clear bag space. Agree who interrupts and whether anyone can remove curses. If an ability is unavailable, play that encounter more cautiously rather than assuming somebody has it.
From the High Seat into Old Ironforge
Go to the High Seat in Ironforge. Inside the throne room, the cobwebbed passage on the left leads down. Follow the descent through Old Ironforge to the instance entrance. The map pin marks the way down, not an interior boss location.
Horde players must enter an enemy capital; this is not an equally safe approach. Do not base the trip on a supposed secret teleporter shortcut.

Alliance: the Dun Morogh preparation
Beldin Steelgrill at 50.44 / 49.09 offers A Visitor to Dun Morogh. It points you towards Earthseer Farsen above Gol’Bolar Quarry, at 64.87 / 58.47. Farsen offers Farsen’s Watch, followed by Nip ’Em in the Bud: use his farsight and deal with ten Dark Iron Spies.
The Dark Iron Map starts Underground Map. Return it to Farsen to unlock Old Ironforge Incursion, the quest for Durgen’s head. Turning in the map is the relevant prerequisite; a breadcrumb directing you somewhere is not the same as a mandatory prerequisite.

Quests at the entrance and inside
Alliance players should speak to Afadra Dunwall for The Restless Dead and Thom Filch for Important Heirlooms before the portal. Their objectives are fifteen Enraged Apparitions, ten Tormented Souls and Faldrim, and eight Dwarven Heirlooms respectively. Check everyone’s progress before moving on.
Inside, the Ghostly Attendant offers An Ancient Grudge. Accept it before Faldrim and return afterwards. This quest is also available to Horde characters. Alliance players should look for the Treaty of Understanding; its item starts a delivery to Magni.
Four fights, four clear priorities
Follow Faldrim → Magmatus → Plunder → Durgen. Before each pull, let the tank indicate the fighting position. Healers and ranged players should avoid positions where knockback or fear would send them into uncleared enemies.
| Boss | Your job |
|---|---|
| Faldrim Anvilmar | Clear space; interrupt Mind Blast and watch the tank’s curse. |
| Magmatus | Control and kill the summoner first. Keep away from the elemental; heal the random fire damage. |
| Plunder | Position knockbacks into cleared space or a safe wall. |
| Durgen Dirgehammer | Clear the room; control the boss and two golems together. Agree a focus target and prepare for fear and bleeding. |
Choose loot for the job you do
An Ancient Grudge offers a choice between Catacomb Cloak and Deepgrave Trousers. Compare their actual stats with your current gear before accepting. A different icon or colour does not automatically mean an upgrade.
Agree loot needs before the first drop, especially when someone wants gear for another role. Do not plan the evening around a guaranteed item; the run remains useful without your preferred drop.
Check turn-ins before leaving
Return to the attendant after Faldrim rather than leaving her turn-in until you have exited. Turn in the two entrance quests to their original givers. Durgen’s head and the treaty go to Magni at the High Seat.
Compare objectives and bags before anyone hearths out. Collecting a missing heirloom now is easier than returning after the party has dispersed.
