Realmless Azeroth: rulesets replace realm lists

Forever moves beyond traditional realm lists. Ruleset, region and language preference will shape where players meet.

Realm selection is changing

Players will no longer choose one realm from a long list. Instead, they select a ruleset. Blizzard has named Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, with Hardcore planned after launch.

Regional identity remains

Characters will use two-part names that are unique within their game region. Blizzard aims to connect larger populations while preserving the familiarity of recognizable names.

Language becomes a preference

Players can select a language preference and should encounter more people who share it. For international groups, the game region remains a separate technical layer.

What friends should agree on before starting

Ruleset and faction are real grouping boundaries. Blizzard does not support groups across rulesets, and Alliance and Horde remain separate. Agree on these choices before planning dungeons together. Two Alliance characters on Normal can benefit from its larger player pool. If one chooses PvP instead, being realmless does not remove that separation.

A language preference is not a separate language realm

The preference is intended to help you encounter players who share your language. It does not promise an exclusively single-language environment or confirm cross-region groups. Region, ruleset, faction and language answer different questions. Two-part names unique within a region do not replace agreeing where your group will play.

Hardcore remains a separate case

Hardcore is planned for after launch and has its own enclosed ecosystem. Blizzard says a character can transfer out after death, including to PvP. Hardcore accomplishments can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore. This does not establish unrestricted transfers between every other ruleset.
